Thesis Title: Deterministic Communication with Virtualized Gateways

The Networked Embedded Systems (NES) group at RISE SICS is a part of the Computer Systems Laboratory. The current research focus is on the Internet of Things. Among the group's key technologies are the Contiki operating system, uIP stack, ContikiRPL, SICSLoWPAN, and lightweight implementation of IPsec and DTLS. The NES group conduct projects together with industry and academic partners from Sweden and across the world.
Deterministic as well as flexible communication technologies are needed in the context of industry 4.0 applications. Software-Defined Radio (SDR) enables the development of virtualized gateways where radio communication technologies can be designed in software. With these gateways, communication technologies can be downloaded like applications from an app store. Different application requirements can then be easily accommodated in a dynamic flexible way.
SDRs however, have variable delay links between the radio hardware and the computer system. This makes deterministic communication difficult. Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) is recently gaining traction because of its high reliability and determinism. In this thesis, we want to explore how to enable TSCH on our virtualized gateways and how it affects the reliability of the system. The focus of the thesis will be on exploring how to provide time synchronization across variable delays links and what are the performance gains in terms of scalability and reliability with such a solution.
Passion for technology, inner drive, and basic knowledge of C programming and embedded systems are the only prerequisites.
