The Role

Helixworks oligonucleotide synthesis is designed to scale on planar surfaces with specific functional modifications. Our product requirements demand coated surfaces with state-of-the-art performance in reactivity, orientation, accessibility and stability of the surface-confined DNA molecules. Helixworks is looking for a highly motivated surface chemistry engineer to accelerate our next generation of DNA fabrication system. This role will be involved in the design, development, and scaling of advanced surfaces for DNA fabrication. In this role, you will work closely with molecular biology, substrate and automation engineers to advance early-stage concepts to pilot scale production activities.


  • Execute surface coating and process development for a variety of functionalised surfaces
  • Design and assess surface coating formulations for process optimisation and scalability
  • Conduct systematic experimentations on the designed coating formulations to identify key parameters for control over coating quality and performance
  • Analyse coating performances and optimise synthesis process parameters
  • Take independent steps to iterate on process improvement to reach target surface performance specifications and functions
  • Build Helixworks coating formulation and test capabilities, specifying and acquiring the necessary materials, processing aids, formulating ingredients, and test equipment.
  • Document surface performance parameters and communicate key learnings to cross-functional teams to enable transition towards production development
  • Work with manufacturing team to setup pilot scale production
  • Work in the laboratory/shop environment with analytical equipment. Prepare the various buffers/reagents necessary for experiments and ensure their quality control
  • Read and review technology proceedings and papers to broaden knowledge, project future trends and propose directions in DNA data storage technology development


  • A Bachelors of Science or higher degree or higher in Materials Science, Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry or related field
  • Ability to design and execute surface chemistry evaluations for a repertoire of coatings
  • Ability to identify and evaluate substrates to enable high-performance/scalable biochemical reactions
  • Ability to identify root-causes and conduct troubleshooting to solve issues
  • 2 years or more academic and scientific background in surface chemistry or synthetic organic chemistry or polymer chemistry or oligonucleotide chemistry or bio-conjugation chemistry
  • Broad knowledge and R&D experience, bench skills to accurately complete complex workflows of surface chemistry reactions required
  • Strong experience in surface characterisation techniques
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, and detailed documentation skills
  • Skilled at managing multiple priorities simultaneously and ability to independently execute those priorities
Medical coverage with compensation based on experience level.
Salary range: €40-49k
